Etna Excursion 3000 - Hike to the summit base of Etna

Visit Mount Etna climb up to the base of the summit active craters at over 3000 mt of altitude, one of the most fascinating experience to explore the volcano followed by a alpine volcanologist guide through the most recent lava flows and the most important eruptions of Etna. A whole day in contact with the volcanic nature of this alive mountain.

With Etna3340 you will go beyond the limits where most of other groups have to stop (2920 meters of altitude), we will take you where others can not go without a dedicated volcanologist guide. You will reach the base of the summit active craters.

Highlights :

An Etna tour in the desert nature of the volcano, visiting the major craters, that still warm today, eruptions occurred between 2001 and 2003. We will walk across the most recent lava flows of 2017 to reach the base of the active craters, arriving at 300 mt from the summit.

You can not really say you've truly visited Etna if you have not seen the immensity of the Valle del Bove. The Caldera, the scientific name, is 5 km wide and 7 km long and with its extension covers almost the entire eastern side of the volcano. Its walls goes up to 1000 meters high.

This Etna excursion includes also a visit to a long lava channel with walls high several meters, created at the effusive vent of the 2002 eruption.

The exclusive itinerary proposed by Etna3340 allows you to explore areas of the volcano far from the usual crowds, otherwise inaccessible without an official authorised volcanologist guide.

Visit Mount Etna

Is the ideal choice for all hikers who wish to climb up to the base of the active craters of volcano Etna. We can pick you up at your hotel or at our meeting point with our 4x4 off road vehicles and have the pleasure to offer you an all-you-can-eat breakfast (coffee, cappuccino, juice and pastries or granita and brioche), also included a picnic lunch composed of typical Sicilian's specialities.

We will drive trough the typical volcanic villages of Etna ascending the south flank through the lava flow of 1983 observing the various evidences of its inexorable passage.

Climb to Mount Etna Summit base

We will reach the sky resort at the South side of Mount Etna, where then by cablecar we will reach the 2500 mt of altitude. Away from the croud our alpine volcanologist guide will start the hike towards the 3000 mt, visiting also the most interesting and devastating eruptions of volcano Etna as the 2001, 2002/2003 hot craters and also the latest lava flow of 2017.

You can observe the eventual eruptive activity, the great caldera "Valle del Bove" (theater of recent eruptions) and the panorama on the Mediterranean sea, Taormina, Catania and the Italian coast.

At 3000 meters altitude you will appreciate being able to approach the great craters of the summit (the New Mouth, the Central and the South-East craters) on an exclusive route far from the crowd and inaccessible without official alpine volcanologist guide.

For those wishing to walk less, there is the possibility to use the cable car and the 4x4 Unimog as part of a private tour (with jeep and guide for you), quote on demande.

In the presence of snow - Lunch at Villa Dorata

In the presence of snow covers, the ascent and descent of Etna will only be done by cable car and snow grooming vehicles and a light lunch will be planned at the charming restaurant Villa Dorata a former princely residence built in 1900. The menu is rich in flavours and essences of the Sicilian tradition: starters, a pasta dish made with traditional Sicilian recipes, dessert, coffee, water, Etna DOC wine. Please tell us in advance if you want a vegetarian menu or else. In winter all excursions may be subject of changes due to weather and snow covers conditions.

Without Snow - Picnic Lunch

In order to make the most out of the volcano, lunch at the restaurant will be replaced by a picnic in nature. If you have not been able to prearrange a picnic lunch, along the way we will make a stop in order to let you buy some of the traditional Sicilian products, you will be followed by our guide, who will advise you on the various local specialities. (consider around 6€ / person).

Visit of a Lava Channel

Along the journey you will also visit a lava channel, a natural conduit formed by flowing lava which moves beneath the hardened surface of a lava flow. Tubes and channel can drain lava from a volcano during an eruption, or can be extinct, meaning the lava flow has ceased, and the rock has cooled and left a long channel.

Tasting of honeys, wines and liqueurs in Zafferana Etnea

If time allows, the excursion will end with a free tasting of Etna's best products as honeys, wines, liqueurs and much more at a local producer in Zafferana Etnea, village of honey makers on the Etna Wine Route.

We organise daily excursions, for your comfort it is also possible to drive to our meeting point with your own vehicle and get on our 4×4 offroad vehicle. We do only make small groups of 12 partecipants at the time, all followed by expert multilanguage mountain leaders. Our excursion starts early in the morning to allow you to fully appreciate the beauty and majesty of the volcano, thanks to carefully chosen itineraries far from the usual crowds.

Volcanoes are places of particular interest, either when they are inactive, with their rough and lunar landscape, and when they are in activity, with fiery scenarios that arouse, together, fear and curiosity. Etna stand-up more than others, for its size and for its almost incessant activity, visible from land and sea, and for its long history that crossed with the ancient Mediterranean civilisations.

In winter all excursions may vary on timetable and schedule following the weather and snow covers conditions.
