The Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte was built in 1606 to connect the ancient part of Caltagirone, a town in the province of Catania, to the new city built in the upper part. The staircase, over 130 meters long, is lined with balconies and has become the emblem of the city and one of its marvels. The tiles are decorated with island motifs from the Xth to the 20th centuries. The 142-step staircase is annually illuminated on July 24 and July 25 (for the St. James City's patron saint) by thousands of lively flames. The one month time allows tourists and visitors to schedule their coming to admire the grandeur of the Scala between ceramics, flowers and spring colors.
