Climb Mount Etna Summit Hike


The top hike on the Etna. The beauty of this natural active volcanic environment, give to the hikers an unforgettable remember.
This ascent to the top of Mount Etna is an intense hike of about 5 hours, 10 km trek distance in an active volcanic environment.

The visit will be carried in a small group of 12 participants maximum. An alpine volcanologist english speaking guide will accompany you throughout the day. 

To climb Mount Etna's summit, you must be in perfect health and have no physical problems preventing you from taking part the excursion that takes place in an active volcanic area, uneven routes and variable altitudes.

The itinerary can be modified in different ways, depending on weather conditions, emission of toxic gases and geodynamics of the volcano, the guide, who's in charge of your safety, will be the only one deciding and taking unquestionable decisions.



The Mountain Track up Mount Etna


Thanks to the cable bar and 4x4 buses Unimog you will reach the 2900 meters altitude and start the ascent to the summit of Mount Etna, you will be given of the basic equippement as helmets and hiking poles. Our alpine volcanologist guide will unfold all volcano Etna eruptive history.

The climb to the summit of Mt Etna is an amazing hike in a dangerous volcanic environment with uneven and rocky terrain leading to the edge of the several actives craters, wlaking through huge fumaroles and sulfuric ground.

You will learn about history and life around Mount Etna from a scientific and cultural perspective. The Etna summit tour continues with a fun downhill run on volcanic ash towards the cablecar, on the way down we will visit the hot craters of 2002 eruption and walk over the most recent lava flow. 

The way down to 2500 meters altitude is planned on foot or 4x4 Unimog. The return to 1900 meters altitude will be by cable car.

picnic lunch is planned and will take place along the way, if you have not been able to prearrange a picnic lunch,  we will make a stop in order to let you get some of the traditional Sicilian products,  followed by our guide, who will advise you on the various local products. The tour ends with the exploration of a lava tube, one of the most interesting for length and shape, equipped with helmet and torch you will discover the "dark side" of this beautiful mountain.

The visit continue with an easy caving experience into a lava tunnel, a natural conduit formed by flowing lava which moves beneath the hardened surface of a lava flow. Tubes can drain lava from a volcano during an eruption, or can be extinct, meaning the lava flow has ceased, and the rock has cooled and left a long cave.


The weather on Mt Etna is often unpredictable you should always be aware that weather conditions on Mountains can change rapidly and often for the worst. A good day at sea level is no guarantee of good weather on the mountain. 

Essential Gear and Clothing 

  • Hiking boots  
  • Rucksack - 35 litres capacity should be sufficient  
  • Waterproof jacket (with hood) - all cars will be equipped of light raincoats jackets
  • Waterproof over trousers
  • Trekking poles - all cars will be equipped
  • General trekking trousers (not jeans or cotton material)  
  • Gaiters (not always essential)
  • Gloves or mitts
  • Spare layer e.g. fleece top
  • Food & Drink
